Bug Reports

Reproducibility is key. Please provide as much information as possible so that we are able to reproduce the bug you describe. If possible, when you encounter a bug, go back and try to get it to happen again so you can be sure how it happens. Exact steps are incredibly helpful!

Screenshots: Providing a link to a screenshot (or even a short video) clearly showing your issue is immensely helpful. Simply attach it to your report.

Output Log / Crashes: Distance generates an output log which will help us greatly in diagnosing your issue. If possible, please attach your output log to your post (especially in the case of a crash).

  • On Windows: “[SteamFolder]/steamapps/common/Distance/Distance_Data/output_log.txt”

  • On OSX: “/Users/[username]/Library/Logs/Unity/Player.log”

  • On Linux: “/home/[username]/.config/unity3d/Refract/Distance/Player.log”

Beta Disclaimer: While Distance is in beta, experimentation comes first, stability second. We’ll do our best to fix game breaking issues as they arise, but our priority while in beta is to experiment with gameplay and features. Know that we read every output log and crash report, though it might take time to respond to each one.

  1. Jumping and rotating to another wall is incredibly wonky

    To the point where I'm stuck on the same wall transition for a few minutes, especially bad in the monolith sector.

      Thanks for submitting. While we’ve been looking at this for a while I wanted to make sure it was officially marked as Under Review.

      I don’t think this is technically a bug, but just a really challenging section that needs some improvement. There’s a downforce on the car that increases with speed, so you need to keep up a high speed to stick to walls and ceilings efficiently. Thanks also to everyone in the comment section providing their feedback!

      • Xbox 360 Controller not detected at all, in both normal and experimental builds.

        As the title says, the controller is detected by every other game in my library and by Windows, but not Distance, at all.

        The experimental build lists it as an Unrecognised Joystick, then having no options for setting it as a 360 Controller. Just 5 options:

        Advanced Joystick
        Advanced PS4
        Advanced PS3
        Logitech Extreme 3D
        G27 Racing Wheel

        This may just be what you are currently testing, but the Xbox 360 Controller not working in the base game and the experimental build severely turns me off playing.

          Hi Laurence,

          Thanks for the report! Is this an official Microsoft Corporation Xbox 360 wired controller? If so that’s definitely a strange bug since it’s the most popular controller by players in both the standard and experimental builds.

            That’s particularly weird to hear but thanks for letting us know! We’ll be working on multiplayer at some point in the future and when we do we’ll take a look at how connections are handled between clients and servers again. Thanks again for the feedback :)

            • When I played the first level, the game crashed my graphics card(radeon r9 380) a little bit into the track.

              I started up the first level, but it crashed my graphics card shortly after the point where it tells you to boost. Another thing that may or may not be related is that even though I have all my graphics settings on high and the game seems to handle it fine, the video quality it really sort fuzzy and not crisp like in the screenshots on the store page.

                Thanks for the reports. You can link the Steam page for the graphics options screenshot (if applicable) or upload to any image provider (I’d suggest imgur), although I’m pretty sure by now that this issue goes beyond that.

                In the meantime, can you see if launching the game with the “-force-d3d9” (no quotes) command-line option helps? In Steam, you can set this by right-clicking Distance, clicking Properties, and clicking the “Set Launch Options” button.

                Also, specifying the other level that crashed might help in narrowing down the issue.

              • The "Level Settings" tab has no content after testing a level.

                After testing a level and going back into the editor (via the ESC-Menu) the "Level Settings" tab is empty. This can be fixed by leaving and re-entering the editor.

                  I posted this before but I have to redo my description because the issue is more different than I thought before.

                  This bug was noticed in experimental builds and only there! Some of these builds are:
                  4581
                  4587
                  4664
                  The stable build before these works just fine...

                  Basically Distance crashes my graphics drivers while playing a level. It already happens seconds after I got on my first track. The one time I tried to do multiplayer it crashed instantly. The editor is affected by this too. Changing the main menu level triggers this sometimes too but I don't really know…

                    When using two monitors, one being 1280x1024, and the other being 1920x1080, the game gives a maximum resolution of 1280x1024, despite the 1080p monitor being set to be the primary in Windows.

                      Ideally, the game would have controls to switch monitors. For now, here’s the workaround process:

                      1. Start up the game, which will presumably still open on the wrong monitor in fullscreen.
                      2. Head to the graphics options, and turn fullscreen mode off.
                      3. Drag the window over to the correct monitor.
                      4. Turn fullscreen mode back on. You should now see Distance in the same resolution as before, but on the correct monitor.
                      5. Exit and re-open the graphics options. This is what gives you different resolutions to choose from.
                      6. Choose the correct resolution for your monitor from the resolution dropdown!

                      My back thrusters are always on, I'm not moving my right stick at all and the gmae still inputs the right thrusters (Im using an xbox 360 controller)

                        While using the new steam gamepad controller. Issues with assigning buttons.. it seems the right bumper button alwqays makes the car boost, (it seems to see it as a B button no matter what) and the left trigger is always seen as jump (once again when all options for this are removed) Accerlration and deceleration cannot be asainged to the normal triggers either without them also still being rotate.. which means when ever a jump is performed the car spins uncontrollably. This is the only game i've found this issue in so far with the steam conroller.

                          In today's build the game freezes in DirectX 11 but using the launch option -force-d3d9 the game works. All previous builds the DirectX 11 mode worked.

                          • Corruption - Adventure Map - Infinite Loop Bug

                            In the Adventure mission (Corruption), during the part where there is one warp portal after the other--if you die in the 'speed-up' ground phase, you will teleported to the beginning of that phase, where gravity will pull you automatically into a free-fall state, and send you into a portal, the gravity then counter-acts and send you back through the portal. Putting you into an intifinite warp loop that you cannot get out of.

                                Always crash when multiplayer match begins. It used to work. now it can't. yet single player is fine. The crash is a time out, white screen and windows detects a hung app.

                                  The second controller is never detected. I've already reported this at the discussion forum, another user reported something similar while others don't have any trouble.

                                  I've uninstalled and reinstalled Distance. Tried steam beta version, tried steam link and connected to PC. Other games with split screen work perfectly well.

                                  Controllers are detected by the Steam interface. Distance seems to detect only the first one as a "XBOX controller". The second one is never detected unless I switch each of them to a specific and different combination of button layouts which makes it uncomfortable to play.

                                    Most lighted entites are invisible, but they still function normally.

                                    It is most apparent in the latest builds of the release after Unity 5 was made the base platform.

                                    The effectede items are:

                                    Lasers

                                    Light around the sawblades and the other spiky barrel thing

                                    Directional Arrows

                                    Checkpoints as in they aren't there at all you cannot see the green ring but still work

                                    Light made when your car explodes

                                    Finishline grid

                                    Kill grid

                                    Car horn (makes noise but no light emmiting from the car itself)

                                    Thruster fire

                                    Items not affected:

                                    Lens Flares

                                    Directional light

                                      In level Corruption, in Adventure mode, I was just getting past the point where you are going up a wall and there are 3 saw blades moving horizontally across your path, I went through the portal, but got cut by a laser shortly after. I flew off the track and died. When I reset, I immediately fell of the wall, backwards into the portal. I managed to get back on the track, but I was going backards through the portal and seemed to be stuck in an infinite portal driving loop.

                                      I doubt I could reproduce.

                                        We will be doing a pass over all of the Adventure levels at some point. That is a weird bug and maybe we can fix it if we can reproduce it. Thanks for letting us know :)

                                      • After closing distance, "Waiting for Distance to close"- steam. have to use task manager and force quit steam.

                                        Distance still running somewhere in the background after i close the game. Afterwards if i try to quit steam i get "Waiting for Distance to close.." message and steam basically freezes up. Then I have to use task manager and end all the steam tasks at the same time.

                                          Thanks for the report. It unfortunately seems likely that this is tied to the Logitech Profiler software running alongside the game. Can you confirm that you have this installed and running? If not, please check for any other similar programs that might be linked with Steam and/or Distance (like anti-virus software).

                                          If so, a temporary fix is to close that program after closing Distance. The handle to Distance should then be released and you’ll be able to proceed.

                                          We’ll look into fixing this bug in a future update.

                                        • Multiplayer: A HUD don't let me play in

                                          When I play multiplayer i can't see the full screen because an HUD, screen, display, whatever, is showing the game type and the chat, but very strangely. I't wont go away and it's really annoying because I can still drive but the screen is darkened and things are in the way. If you push ESC, it remains there.
